Service Learning Description

Ready to Learn - Literacy Tutor

 

As an AmeriCorps member, work one-on-one and in small groups with elementary students who need help learning to read. You will utilize literacy interventions and conduct progress monitoring to ensure the student is on track to read at grade level according to state/district standards. Wonder what it means to be an AmeriCorps member? ESSENTIAL DUTIES

·        Have a mission to serve. AmeriCorps is not a job it is an opportunity to serve.

·        Attend mandatory training in literacy interventions & AmeriCorps regulations

·        Develop & maintain a committed schedule to assist 4-8 students weekly 

·        Implement prescribed literacy interventions as directed by certified teacher

·        Review data to assess if the interventions are successful or if a change in intervention is necessary

·        Communicate with supervisor and teachers regarding interventions and progress

·        Plan and implement two service projects to include families of students enrolled in tutoring program

·        Be open to constructive feedback

·        Submit updated timesheet according to schedule utilizing My Service Log website (accessed via internet) 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·        United States Citizen, a United States National, or a lawful permanent resident alien

·        17 years of age

·        High School Graduate  

For acceptance into the program the applicant is required to pass the following required checks:        

(1) Arkansas State Police check,

(2) NSOPR (National Sex Offender Public Registry) check, and

(3) FBI check. 

If the applicant has moved to Arkansas recently or claims residency in another state, he/she will also be required to pass that state’s criminal history check.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·        College coursework or degree preferred

·        Strong interest in education and experience working with elementary-age children

·        Speak, read and write English fluently

·        Responsible, organized, motivated, professional, patient, with a positive attitude

·        Ability to make a commitment to a service contract

·        Ability to work in a school setting with active young children


Service Learning Open Positions:

450 hours: November 2011 to May 2012, $3600 living allowance plus possible $1468 Education Award

450 hours: November 2011 to July 2012, $3600 living allowance plus possible $1468 Education Award

675 hours: November 2011 to May 2012, $5500 living allowance plus possible $2114 Education Award

675 hours: November 2011 to July 2012, $5500 living allowance plus possible $2114 Education Award
