The Healing Power of Community

Jamie Courtney has a passion for helping and that is why she chose the mental health profession as a career. However, after being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Jamie found herself as the one in need. Three years after her diagnosis, Jamie was unable to work and had exhausted all of her resources, including health insurance and savings. Despite referring numerous others to the Conway Interfaith Clinic, Jamie was too proud to go herself, so a friend picked up the phone and made an appointment for her.

In her own words, Jamie received “the most compassionate, wonderful medical care anyone could ask for.” She was treated with kindness and respect throughout her treatment from, and was actually able to return to work. Jamie has now had health insurance benefits for a little more than a year now, and says that she misses “being able to receive care from Conway Interfaith Clinic.”

Prior to needing United Way, Jamie contributed to the annual campaign through payroll deduction. She says now that if she had any idea how many people over the years that she had referred to United Way, or that someday she would benefit from United Way herself, she would have “discovered that she had a little more to give.”
